TORONTO – Diamond Schmitt Architects has been selected for the second year in a row among Canada’s Greenest Employers. The editorial competition organized by Mediacorp Canada Inc. recognizes companies that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness.
“We’ve seen a shift towards more formal program and strategic sustainability policies, which reflect a much longer term commitment on the part of employers,” said Richard Yerema, Managing Editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, of which Green Employers is a category.
“Diamond Schmitt Architects is an industry leader in designing environmentally sustainable buildings for our clients and we practice what we preach,” said Birgit Siber, Principal, Diamond Schmitt Architects.
Winning employers are evaluated on the following criteria: (1) unique environmental initiatives or programs they have developed; (2) whether they have been successful in reducing their own environmental footprint; (3) whether their employees are involved in these programs and contribute unique skills; and (4) whether their environmental initiatives have become linked to the employer’s public identity to attract new people to the organization.
Diamond Schmitt developed ecoMetrics, a method to compare energy-saving measures across the firm’s portfolio of buildings. An in-house sustainable design committee seeks out and implements green initiatives for the office, from sourcing recycled-content supplies to using a green car service for travel. Only five percent of office staff drives to work; the majority use transit, cycle or walk. The company also participates in an annual fundraising drive in support of environmental causes.
The company has 24 LEED accredited architects and currently has 32 LEED certified and 9 registered projects. Two current projects are also designed to meet the “Living Building Challenge” to be completely carbon neutral, or even net positive.
In addition to being among Canada’s Greenest Employers, Diamond Schmitt Architects this year has been named to Canada’s Top 100 Employers, Greater Toronto’s Top Employers, Canada’s Top Small & Medium Employers as well as renewing its position in the Platinum Club of Canada’s Best Managed Employers.
Diamond Schmitt Architects (www.dsai.ca) is based in Toronto. Informed by urbanism, driven by design, the firm’s extensive portfolio includes performing arts centres, residential and commercial buildings, research and academic facilities. Current projects include the design for David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City; the restoration of Ottawa’s heritage Government Conference Centre to include the interim home of the Canadian Senate; the transformation of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa; and the new campus for Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver.
