Dartmouth Sportsplex Renovation

Halifax Regional Municipality

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Client: Halifax Regional Municipality

In Association with Abbott Brown Architects

MAP

The renovation of the Dartmouth Sportsplex focuses on three principle issues; Activity, Transparency, and Connection.

To address the need to promote health and activity among youth, a new double gymnasium with seating for 250 will be added. Additionally, new glazed fitness and weight training facilities will be created, significantly located to provide both encompassing views to the Harbour. A central cafe provides an opportunity for refreshment between activity. Meeting and Multipurpose rooms are grouped at the lower level, engaged with the core. The aquatics area will have a splash area for kids, new water slides and a therapy pool.

Critical to the renovation is an idea of inter-connectivity; where rooms and activities are visible to each other. Fitness rooms overlook the gymnasia and Community Rooms overlook the pool. In this manner, patrons engage in the facility on many levels, engage in more activities, and ultimately make more connections within the community.

Upon its completion, the Dartmouth Sportsplex will be a revitalized social hub for long-time users and new and will be a freely accessible and sustainable facility within the community.
