This project includes an $8.6M Orchestra Hall renovation, a 2,000-seat music theatre listed on the National Register of Historical Places, the design of a 560 seat Music Box theatre and a 10,000-square-foot Music Education Centre.
The Music Education Centre is composed of a variety of learning spaces and is shared by the Detroit School Board and Community Out Reach programs. The Centre fosters distance learning by connecting the students to an international pool of musicians via electronically outfitted classrooms. Each classroom contains recording / transmitting computers, which via video conferencing, allow students to create international orchestras and bands. All classrooms are acoustically separated allowing for both instrumental and choral teaching spaces.
In addition, rehearsal space allows for members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to teach students on the premises. The space is shared with over 3,000 students who attend the Detroit School of Performing Arts located behind the DSO, allowing the Music Centre to become a nucleus for music education in the greater Detroit area.
