Positioned as the gateway to the West Kowloon Cultural District, a 17 facility arts and culture district on the north shore of Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong, the Xiqu Centre is the first facility in the development, and will provide a home for the presentation and development of traditional Cantonese Opera.

The competition included a short-list of five international firms that developed schematic designs for the facility.  A feature of the competition process was two interactive workshop sessions with the building users and performers from the local Xiqu community.

The DSA concept, developed in collaboration with Hong Kong based Wong and Ouyang Architects, located the 1,100 seat main theatre at the core of the building and wrapped the key program elements (museum, retail, 80 & 200 seat tearooms, 150 seat cinema) as an ascending spiral culminating at a roof garden and the 400 seat flexible theatre.
