Adaptive reuse stands as a multi-faceted solution to Vancouver’s urban challenges. The practice of re-using existing structures offers opportunities to eliminate waste, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce embodied carbon in existing structures. Beyond ecological benefits, this practice has demonstrated significant impacts on social, cultural, and economic aspects.

Duncan Bates, Senior Associate at Diamond Schmitt; Ryan Bragg, Principal at Perkins+Will; Kai Hotson, Principal at SvN; and Mitchell Hall, Partner at KPMB Architects, will participate in an architecture keynote on Innovations in Adaptive Reuse at BUILDEX Vancouver 2026. The session will be moderated by Mona Lemoine, Associate and Senior Sustainability Consultant at DIALOG.

Together, they will discuss strategies for adaptive reuse in Vancouver and address the balance between preserving architectural heritage and meeting evolving contemporary needs.
