York University’s Markham Campus demonstrates how architecture can drive collaboration, innovation, and inclusion. Designed as a vertical campus—the first university campus of its kind in York Region—the project brings a diverse collection of programs together into a 10-storey building, supporting new pedagogies through interconnected spaces and collaborative work zones.

Principal Don Schmitt will present “Academic Buildings as Catalysts for Innovation” at the 2026 OAA Conference. The session will present the delivery of York University’s new Markham campus, and explore how the design creates an animated crossroads of learning, inquiry, and student engagement that supports the changing academic landscape while activating the surrounding community.

Don will also highlight how the design supports strategic academic partnerships, drives growth, innovation, and fosters positive community impact, resulting in a model for academic space as a catalyst for broader regional development.

The 2026 OAA Conference, themed "Collaboration Powering Innovation," is taking place at the Kitchener-Waterloo tech hub. While the the opportunities and challenges posed by AI automation and energy modeling grab the headlines in Ontario’s Silicon Valley, this year’s theme explores how meaningful collaboration quietly powers creative decision-making relative to architectural quality, practice, and problem-solving.
