Located on the traditional territory of the Mi’kmaq First Nation and the former site of the first Acadian women’s college, the Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre is a new research facility dedicated to protecting Atlantic freshwater and coastal ecosystems. From its earliest stages, Indigenous engagement shaped the project’s vision, ensuring the building not only responds to its environmental mandate but also the cultural and historical significance of its site.
At the 2026 RAIC Conference on Architecture in Vancouver, Principal Peggy Theodore and Senior Associate Sarah Low of Diamond Schmitt, will join Barb Martin, Senior Partner of Han Martin Associates to present “Reconciliation Beyond Design.” Using the Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre as a case study, they will examine how a thoughtful and sustained Indigenous engagement process can extend the impact of a project well beyond the realization of a new building.
The Centre offers an inclusive environment that supports Indigenous ceremonies, storytelling, meetings, and cultural training. Generous, naturally lit open spaces encourage gathering, learning, collaboration, and talking circles, while the use of wood and glazing creates a sense of warmth and connection to land. Visual representations of Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, and Passamaquoddy cultures are woven throughout the architecture and landscape, reinforcing a shared sense of identity and place.
Together Peggy, Sarah and Barb will reflect on how acknowledging the site’s complex history and engaging meaningfully with Indigenous community members and Elders enabled the Centre to move beyond architecture as an object, to become a catalyst for community, belonging, and connection.
