Peel Region Paramedic Services celebrates the commencement of work on the new Docksteader Paramedic Reporting Station—the region’s fifth such facility, and largest at over 84,000 square feet. Serving as a key hub where paramedics start and end their shift, the facility will centralize and improve services and amenities for paramedics across Peel Region. On track to achieve Zero Carbon Building Design certification and be Net-Zero Energy ready, the station sets a new benchmark for sustainable civic infrastructure.

“The Docksteader facility represents a substantial and critical expansion in Peel Region’s paramedic capacity. Working closely with the PRPS team, we have been able to develop a marked innovation in paramedic station design through the ‘hub-and-spoke’ model, which will allow for rapid turnaround in ambulance readiness,” says Arne Suraga, Senior Associate at Diamond Schmitt. “The building is also innovating in its approach to low-carbon steel construction, an energy efficient envelope, and all-electric high-performance systems, with infrastructure in place to support an all-electric ambulance fleet in the future.”

The building’s design is defined by two 15-metre-high south-facing solar walls that serve a dual purpose: differentiating its main programs while reducing winter heating needs by 30%.

Balancing civic presence with human scale, the two-storey building is organized by four major programmatic blocks between the solar walls including the Vehicle Bay—which can accommodate 60 ambulances—and Logistics areas that stand 14 metres high. A 9-metre-high Administrative and Training block provides a more intimate scale at the building’s entry points and houses locker rooms, fitness and reflection spaces, and a large training area with flexible configurations capable of hosting sessions, meetings, and events of all sizes.

Daylighting strategies create a healthy and welcoming work environment, providing transparency both outward and inward, and connect the building to the public realm. Large glazing, roof monitors, and operable panels reduce daytime lighting needs, bring natural light to the ground level, and allow natural ventilation.

Designed with resiliency at the forefront, the Docksteader Station is envisioned as a post-disaster facility capable of maintaining operations during large-scale emergencies and serving as a command centre for Peel Region Paramedic Services during any such event.

“Breaking ground on the Docksteader Paramedic Reporting Station is a day of shared progress in delivering a vital, life-saving service to Peel residents,” says Nando Iannicca, Chair and CEO, Peel Region. “It is an investment in a modern, forward-looking paramedic service that meets the evolving needs of a growing community.”

The Docksteader Paramedic Reporting Station is expected to be complete in early 2027.
