TORONTO – Since its inception five years ago, Canada’s Top Small & Medium Employers (SME) recognizes companies with the nation’s best workplaces and forward-thinking human resources policies. The winners for 2018 were announced today and, for the fifth year in a row, the program acknowledges Diamond Schmitt Architects.
“For most working Canadians, it’s really like finding the Holy Grail,” says Richard Yerema, Managing Editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers, noting that smaller companies are often perceived to offer fewer benefits and less opportunity for growth. “Not only is it possible to have the best of both worlds, but some SMEs are leading the way, combining the entrepreneurial feel of working at a small organization with the kinds of perks and benefits once available only at larger employers,” the program stated in a press release.
“We are thrilled to be recognized consistently over the last five years as a great place to work,” said Donald Schmitt, Principal, Diamond Schmitt Architects. “We care a great deal about our diverse, supportive workplace and the excitement our team brings to innovation and transformation where a collaborative process is the foundation of our accomplishment. Excellence is rooted in the culture of our workplace.”
For 2018, the SME jury cited Diamond Schmitt’s policies of reaching out to the next generation through apprentice programs, co-op opportunities and paid internships.
“These employers offer fun, interesting, engaged workplaces where you can still get benefits like good maternity top-up or a decent retirement savings plan,” Yerema added. “It’s an attractive combination for employees looking for the best of both worlds.”
SMEs are also noted for their year-over-year employment growth and Diamond Schmitt is no exception.
Winning companies are graded on eight key areas: physical workplace; work atmosphere and social programs; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time-off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.
