Aaron Costain

Aaron Costain is a graduate of Dalhousie University and was the recipient of the School of Architecture’s Thesis Award in 2002. He joined Diamond Schmitt Architects the same year.  Aaron has experience with institutional projects in a variety of capacities, from feasibility studies, programming and schematic design through to construction documents and contract administration.  He is a registered member of the OAA.  Aaron was made Associate in 2017.

Recent team projects include the KPMG Tower at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, a 350,000-square-foot LEED Gold-certified office tower and retail pavilion.  He also supervised the design and execution of the building envelope of the new Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, a $200-million LEED Silver registered addition to a large facility in Alberta.

Aaron has worked on several performing arts projects in St. Catharines, Richmond Hill and Cambridge, Ontario. Aaron was a Team Architect for the LEED Gold-certified Cambridge Civic Administration Centre, and Project Architect for the renovation of the adjacent Heritage City Hall, including the redesigned council chambers.

As Project Architect, Aaron worked on the Robarts Library Master Plan and subsequent Revitalization at the University of Toronto.  This project updated spaces and added study positions throughout the library, and the heritage-listed building remained open for use while the construction was phased over several years.

Aaron is currently overseeing construction of Robarts Common, a 45,000 gsf addition to Robarts Library.  The new pavilion adds 1,200 new study positions over five floors, effectively contributing one-third more seats to the Library.
