Divide and Conquer: Transforming the Toronto Centre for the Arts

To adapt to changes in the live theatre market, the 1800-seat auditorium at the Toronto Centre for the Arts has been divided into two venues: a 575-seat proscenium theatre and a 300-seat black box theatre. The larger room transforms the orchestra seating and balconies of the previous configuration. The black box occupies the stage and fly tower. Gary McCluskie, Principal Diamond Schmitt Architects, describes the architectural intervention to create two distinctive and innovative rooms.
