Led by the project team of Diamond Schmitt, Selldorf Architects, and Two Row Architect, the Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery has achieved CaGBC Zero Carbon Building Design certification, making it one of only a few museum spaces globally to accomplish this. Designed to operate without burning fossil fuel, it is also targeting Zero Carbon Building Operations Certification.
The gallery represents a significant expansion that will increase the Art Gallery of Ontario’s total display space by 30 per cent, allowing the museum to better accommodate its growing collection of modern and contemporary art.
Completing the AGO’s existing architecture while respecting the scale of the surrounding neighbourhood the gallery will connect to the current building at four points, substantially improving visitor circulation. Inside, at least 13 new exhibition spaces will feature varying ceiling heights and scales. These column-free galleries are designed to be highly functional and highly flexible, meeting the evolving needs of future generations of artists working across all media.
Reflecting a deep commitment to the land and its history, the design is grounded in Indigeneity. Led by Two Row Architect and informed by ongoing engagement with Indigenous leaders and communities, the project ensures adaptability, accessibility, inclusivity, inviting thresholds, and the use of meaningful materials to create a welcoming environment that is connected to its place.
As part of the “2026 Ontario Budget: A Plan to Protect Ontario”, the Province of Ontario has officially announced funding to support the development of the Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery.
