The University of Toronto’s Temerty Building is featured on ArchDaily in an article by Antonia Piñeiro.

Designed by Diamond Schmitt and MVRDV, in collaboration with Two Row Architect, the building will replace a 1969 wing on the west side of the existing Medical Sciences Building.

Intended to meet growing spatial demands, the facility will provide new laboratories and specialized environments, with nearly 60% of the area dedicated to research, while incorporating flexible, multi-purpose spaces that serve as a campus centerpiece for social, intellectual, and ceremonial life.

The building’s massing is inspired by the local geology, landscape, and historic setting. Featuring sandstone and glass, the façade is defined by vertical lines and curved corners that reflect the neighbouring Gothic architecture and Convocation Hall.

Social and environmental responsibility are also emphasized through the integration of dedicated spaces for Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers, as well as a teaching garden. In addition, a basement energy plant is designed to help the university meet its 2050 climate goals.

Upon completion, the Temerty Building will form a crossroads for the wider university community and, for the first time in 50 years, open up to the surrounding landscape.
