TORONTO – The editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers today announced companies celebrated for their sustainable initiatives. For the fifth year in a row, Diamond Schmitt Architects is among Canada’s Greenest Employers, leading the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness.

The award program managed by Mediacorp Canada Inc. compares applicants to other employers in their industry and provides reasons for selection. For 2020, jurors identified Diamond Schmitt’s comprehensive commitment to greener building design, with over 40 completed LEED projects and 17 LEED projects on the go. In addition, six projects are targeting Net Zero, four for Green Globes and two projects are on track for One Planet Living certification.

“Sustainability is fundamental to our practice and we challenge norms with every project,” said Michael Szabo, Principal, at Diamond Schmitt. “We apply innovative research and expertise in a collaborative, team-based approach and take pride in engaging in the highest level of sustainable dialogue with clients, partners and consultants.”

Winning employers are evaluated using four main criteria: (1) unique environmental initiatives or programs they have developed; (2) whether they have been successful in reducing their own environmental footprint; (3) whether their employees are involved in these programs and contribute unique skills; and (4) whether their environmental initiatives have become linked to the employer’s public identity, attracting new employees or customers.

A comprehensive program of in-house sustainable initiatives includes sourcing recycled-content supplies, LED lighting on dimmers, a spacious bike room with change facilities, an enhanced recycling program, and scheduled learning opportunities for staff on the latest green initiatives. The company also participates in annual fundraising in support of environmental causes.
