The Ontario government celebrates the official opening of the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) line in Toronto, which began operation under the TTC on December 7, 2025. The new service brings 230,000 more people within walking distance of fast and reliable transit and is expected to move more than 51,000 riders each weekday.
Marking a major milestone in the province’s plan to relieve gridlock and connect more people to jobs and housing, the line, also known as Line 6 Finch West, includes two stations and 16 stops over more than 10 kilometres. The line provides convenient connections to local and regional transit, including TTC buses, GO Transit, MiWay, York Region Transit, and Brampton Züm, and is projected to carry 12 million riders annually by 2031.
As part of the LRT project, Diamond Schmitt led the design of Humber College station—the terminal stop at Humber Polytechnic’s North Campus—coordinating closely with the full consultant team and construction partners, Arup, DTAH, Sener and Mosaic Transit Group, throughout the project.
The station, approximately 28,000 square feet, includes a below‑grade platform integrated with Humber College facilities such as public washrooms and bicycle storage, along with new infrastructure and multi‑modal circulation routes. Accessibility was at the core of the design, and the project underwent multiple consultation rounds with accessibility advocacy groups to ensure the station meets a wide range of user needs.
“The Finch West LRT will give hundreds of thousands of commuters more options to get where they need to go and help protect Ontario by connecting more workers to good-paying jobs,” says Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “We thank the incredible community of builders and partners who worked with us on this project and who have delivered countless benefits that will serve generations to come,” adds Angela Clayton, President and CEO of Infrastructure Ontario.
