Each year, the AIA Canada Design Awards recognizes best practices, innovative thinking, and design excellence. The 2024 awards programs invited entries in the categories of Architecture, Community Engaged Design, Interior Architecture, Residential, Special Projects, Student, Unbuilt and Urban Design.
As a hybrid, mixed-use development, Waterworks rehabilitates, conserves, and expands an industrial Art Deco heritage site through the integration of a diverse program. The design seamlessly combines food-focused retail, a fully serviced YMCA offering health and wellness facilities, a mid-rise condominium with family-oriented and affordable units, and an existing youth shelter.
By emphasizing pedestrian connectivity, increased natural light, and the preservation of the building’s historical character, Waterworks not only supports the life of its residents, but the greater community and urban fabric, breaking down socio-economic barriers and catalyzing the St. Andrew’s Playground neighbourhood. It expresses a holistic approach to retaining the stories of our cities, while setting the stage for new narratives and opportunities for urban transformation, making a significant contribution to the quality of life within the neighbourhood.
