Originally produced by the MAXXI Museum in Rome in 2021, the traveling exhibition Buone Nuove/Good News will arrive at UQAM’s Centre de Design in Montréal. The exhibition documents the contribution of women to architecture over the last few centuries and showcases how they have breathed new life into contemporary practice.
The North American debut of Buone Nuove/Good News took place at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in September 2024, in collaboration with Diamond Schmitt and TMU’s Department of Architectural Science. The Toronto edition featured a spotlight on 15 Canadian women architects, including Diamond Schmitt Principal Sydney Browne. Sydney’s work on the Innovation Village at Fanshawe College – a collaborative space that caters to the different ways people learn – will be also featured.
Buone Nuove presents the works and voices of Italian, Quebecois, Canadian, and international women architects who have transformed the field. By highlighting women-led practices and collectives that have raised the quality modern and contemporary design, the exhibition aims to present inspiring role models for a new generation of city builders.
The Montréal edition will introduce two new sections: a selection of Québec-based women-led architecture firms and a collection of furniture designed by Italian architects from the golden age of design.
Pippo Ciorra, Elena Motisi, and Elena Tinacci curated the original exhibition held at Museo MAXXI, Rome. Lisa Landrum from Toronto Metropolitan university oversaw the Toronto exhibition. Louise Pelletier led the realization of the UQAM – Montréal exhibition, with Federica Sala acting as guest curator Italian furniture.
