Principal Martin Davidson will lead a tour, alongside Lucie Vaillancourt, Partner at LemayMichaud of the The New Vic Project at McGill University as part of the RAIC Conference on Wednesday, June 4, in Montreal, from 8:15 AM to 11:30 AM. This tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of Montreal’s iconic historic sites, currently undergoing a transformative redevelopment.

For over a hundred years, Montreal’s Royal Victoria Hospital occupied a prominent place in the city’s cultural and social landscape. Located on the slopes of Mount Royal, the site is one of the finest examples of 19th-century pavilion-plan hospital design, active from 1893 to 2015. In 2019, McGill University acquired a portion of the site to create a new 50,000m² research and academic hub.

Throughout its life as a hospital, the site underwent many physical transformations and reorganizations. The tour explores different periods of buildings and activities, representing a fascinating of medical architecture that spans more than a century.

Participants will learn about the overall context and broader urban and landscape connections to the City below and the mountain above.  As construction progresses, the tour provides insight into the existing heritage buildings, their current conditions, and the proposed changes aimed at rehabilitating them for a new academic program. It also offers an opportunity to observe how the new architecture and heritage buildings are woven together to provide a renewed presence on the site.
