SLCan Conference: Waterloo Innovation Arena as a catalyst for sustainable innovation
Event Details:
Conference: SLCan Sustainable Laboratory Conference
Speaker(s): Martin Kristensen
Location: Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, 107 Tunnel Mountain Drive, Banff, Alberta
Date: November 18, 2026
Time: 11:00 am
The Waterloo Innovation Arena transformed a 1964 concrete warehouse in downtown Kitchener into a 90,000-square-foot hub for life sciences, technological innovation and commercialization. The project is a working example of how, when policy, institutional vision, and community investment align, sustainable research environments can advance both climate responsibility and economic growth.
Join Martin Kristensen, Associate at Diamond Schmitt; Raed El-Khatib, P.Eng., LEED Green Associate, Principal at Smith + Andersen; and Rob Hunsperger, Architect and Senior Director at the University of Waterloo at the Sustainable Labs Canada Conference as they examine how institutional policy and funding frameworks shaped the transformation of an underused industrial building into high-impact research and entrepreneurial infrastructure.
Using the Arena as a case study, the session examines four interconnected strategies. Adaptive reuse enabled the university to reduce embodied carbon and avoid the costs of demolition and reconstruction. Alignment with UWaterloo's Net Zero Building Guidelines supported high-performance features like insulation, daylight-optimized façades and flexible lab infrastructure designed for long-term efficiency and long-term adaptability. Municipal investment and zoning flexibility further strengthened the project’s viability, positioning the Arena as part of Kitchener’s broader innovation ecosystem. The session will also consider how Waterloo's inventor-owned IP model and shared lab environments allow startups to move efficiently from idea to prototype while reducing duplication of equipment, space, and energy.
Together, these strategies illustrate how coordinated policy incentives can help make sustainable innovation hubs more viable, adaptable and scalable across Canada’s life sciences sector.
