SLCan workshop: The interface of BIM and lab project requirements
Event Details:
Conference: SLCan Sustainable Laboratory Conference
Speaker(s): Victor Lima
Location: Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, 107 Tunnel Mountain Drive, Banff, Alberta
Date: November 17, 2026
Time: 1:30 pm
Laboratory projects present uniquely complex demands for Building Information Modeling (BIM), driven by the need to coordinate specialized equipment, stringent performance criteria, and evolving operational requirements. Labs require a high level of precision in spatial planning, services coordination, and data management, where even minor discrepancies can impact functionality, safety, and compliance.
This hands-on workshop explores the critical interface between BIM processes and the specific needs of lab environments. Led by Director of Digital Practice Victor Lima, the session focuses on practical strategies to enhance clarity, consistency, and value delivery across multidisciplinary teams. Participants will examine methods for tracking lab equipment within BIM—from spatial coordination and utility connections to asset data and lifecycle considerations—while addressing the definition, mass creation, parameter consistency, and governance of standardized BIM families across scalable, complex lab programs, or repeatable lab programs, reducing redundancy while improving data reliability.
Additionally, Victor will cover the practical implementation of ISO 19650, a BIM standard now widely adopted across Canada and increasingly required for federal projects. Attendees will learn how ISO 19650 frameworks—including information requirements, naming conventions, and common data environments—can be effectively integrated into lab workflows to align deliverables with client expectations, reduce risk, and enhance overall project outcomes.
