Principal Matthew Smith has been named a Fellow of the RAIC by The College of Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC).
Fellowships are bestowed upon individuals through a nomination process in recognition of members for their contribution to research, scholarship, public service, and professional standing to the good of architecture in Canada. Matthew has been recognized for his distinguished contribution through excellence in architectural design, design management and innovation, and his exceptional professional achievements.
Since joining Diamond Schmitt in 2003 and becoming a principal in 2010, Matthew has established himself as a trusted leader within the firm. He has led teams in the design and delivery of some of Canada’s most complex healthcare and research facilities, including the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute for St. Michael’s Hospital and the Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre at Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto; the Burnaby Hospital Redevelopment; the Clinical Support and Research Centre for St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver; and Sifton Properties Head Office and West Five in London.
With over three decades of professional practice, Matthew brings an exceptional skill in uniting design excellence with technical precision and operational performance. He has fostered the development of in-house quality standards, built an architectural team with specialized knowledge and expertise, and cultivated long-standing relationships with clients and construction partners nationwide.
Matthew’s work has been recognized with numerous national and international awards, among them the Canadian Urban Institute’s Award for Excellence in Building, the CODA Award for the integration of art and architecture, and a Canadian Green Building Award for innovative environmentally driven design. These honours reflect his deep commitment to sustainable building, well-being, and the advancement of community-focused architecture.
A thoughtful mentor and collaborator, Matthew exemplifies the values of the profession through his leadership, insight, and pursuit of design that elevates both people and place. His contribution to Canadian architecture is distinguished by integrity, innovation, and a dedication to the public good.
Matthew will be officially inducted to the RAIC College on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at a convocation ceremony during the 2026 RAIC Conference in Vancouver, BC.
