Toronto, ON - Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) has officially opened the doors to its new School of Medicine in Brampton, marking a historic milestone as the first medical school to open in the Greater Toronto Area in more than a century.

Designed by Diamond Schmitt, the TMU School of Medicine transforms the former Bramalea Civic Centre into a state-of-the-art facility that aims to address critical gaps in primary care access in the fast-growing Peel Region, while training the next generation of doctors.

“The TMU School of Medicine began, as many things do, as a series of questions and discussions: Can we pioneer a new type of medical school to provide excellent, inclusive care and lead real change in the health care system? What would a medical school, rooted in community and responsive to the needs of the people it serves, look like? Can we help address the health care challenges of the region, and the province, by shaping future-ready doctors dedicated to delivering primary care to those who need it most?” said Mohamed Lachemi, President and Vice-Chancellor.

The design preserves the original brutalist architecture of the former civic building while transforming it into a modern, inclusive, and welcoming environment for medical education. The north wing of the building houses academic research and administrative offices for faculty and staff, while the south wing of the building has been designed as a hub for teaching and learning, anchored by a community clinic on the ground floor that will add much-needed healthcare capacity for the Brampton community.

Program spaces include labs for simulation-based training, active learning classrooms and flexible work areas that support different modes of pedagogy, and encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration. Designed as a hub for teaching and learning the new TMU School of Medicine will not only build community amongst students and faculty, but also serve as a truly integrated health centre, providing access to quality medical care to the community of Peel Region through clinical support programs.
