Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine Building

“We are committed to building a space that provides equitable access, safe and inclusive places to gather, and opportunities to learn and engage with the landscape and each other.”

Dr. Teresa Chan, Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice-President, Medical Affairs

Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) new School of Medicine is a transformative project repurposing the former Bramalea Civic Centre in Brampton into a state-of-the-art medical school. Designed to address the urgent need for healthcare professionals in the Greater Toronto Area, it will be home to aspiring medical students and a primary care clinic.

The design reimagines the brutalist architecture of the original civic building into a welcoming and inclusive space for education, community and connection to nature. Indigenous design elements are integrated into the plan, led by Two Row Architect who have consulted on the project. The project reflects TMU’s vision, including innovative experiential learning, a commitment to sustainability, equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation.

The transformed building will feature functional and flexible learning spaces, anchored by a four-story atrium at the west entrance that serves as a hub for connection and interaction among students, faculty, and visitors.

The south wing will house a community clinic, providing essential healthcare services to Brampton and the wider Peel Region. Other amenities will cater to the wellbeing of students including a fully equipped library, communal kitchen, student-managed herb garden, maker spaces, and event areas.

Aligned with TMU’s commitment to sustainability, the project is also designed to meet LEED standards. By repurposing the existing building, the project also significantly reduces the construction carbon footprint, minimizes energy consumption through envelope and system upgrades to also lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Building Integrated Photovoltaics make up the envelope upgrade for the south wing that demonstrates leading edge energy harvesting technology and fulfills the vision of a community and environmentally ambitious project.
