SLCan Conference: Introduction to Advanced Laboratory Design Containment

Event Details:

Conference: SLCan Sustainable Laboratory Conference

Speaker(s): Peggy Theodore
Location: Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, 107 Tunnel Mountain Drive, Banff, Alberta

Date: November 16, 2026
Time: 1:00 pm

Principal Peggy Theodore is on the Board of Directors of Sustainable Labs Canada and has chaired its Conference Committee for the past five years, giving her a close view of the evolving questions, priorities, and challenges shaping Canada’s science facility community.

As part of SL Can’s 2026 pre-conference program, Peggy is one of discipline leads for the training session “Introduction to Advanced Laboratory Design Containment”, alongside Mary On, Senior Associate at Introba; Kevin Shea, Managing Director at BPA; Kevin Shelast, Principal at Aqua Air; Magali Tremblay, Assistant Director and Associate at Pageau Morel; and Yvon Lachance, President of YLA Architecture.

Intended for laboratory planners, architects, engineers, and facility operators, the course demonstrates how to design containment facilities and rooms, and how various methods of containment fit within a lab facility. Topics include the codes and standards used in science facility design in Canada, the architectural considerations to each containment type, mechanical ventilation, pressurization, and controls, and electrical considerations. Practical design examples anchor the content, and an interactive discussion gives attendees the chance to raise specific topics based on project experience.

An experienced facilitator and LEED Accredited Professional, Peggy guides complex projects from conception through completion, emphasizing collaboration among architects, engineers, operators, and clients to arrive at coordinated and effective design solutions. She will draw on her extensive work designing science, research, and institutional lab environments.

Her portfolio includes the School of Medicine at Queen’s University; the LEED Gold Certified Life Sciences Centre at the University of British Columbia; the LEED Gold Certified Papadakis Integrated Science Building at Drexel University; the LEED Gold CI Public Health Ontario Central Laboratory; the LEED Gold Biological Sciences Complex Renewal at the University of British Columbia; and the Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre in Moncton, targeting LEED Gold certification.

SLCan brings together laboratory owners, operators, designers, engineers, sustainability specialists, and industry partners from across the public and private sectors to share knowledge and advance more sustainable approaches to laboratory planning, design, and operation.
