Principal Gary McCluskie, together with Jeff Craft, principal and design director at STUDIO tla, discuss the design evolution of the West Island at Ontario Place on CP24.
The updated design features a new campus-style layout which will introduce four more acres of public space, including parks, rooftop trails and gardens to the site. A reduced building volume integrates architecture with public park. This design approach brings public green space over and between the architecture, offering additional direct pathways to the water's edge. The expanded rooftop public realm offers panoramic views of the original Ontario Place Pods and Cinesphere, as well as Toronto's downtown skyline and Lake Ontario. The update features new areas that have been designed with input from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN), and recognize the important role of Indigenous heritage on the site.
The evolved design draws on feedback from public meetings, community engagement and City of Toronto planning staff. When complete, the Ontario Place parkland will become the largest public gathering space on Toronto’s western waterfront.
