Just for Kids Clinic
“Very fun and beautifully executed. It truly does look like an engaging place for children.”
CODA Awards Jury, 2017
CIBC Just for Kids is a revitalized, dynamic clinic that sets a new precedent for pediatric medical care. Nestled on the fourth floor of St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto’s west-end, the dated walk-in facility is completely transformed, contributing to the hospital’s vision—The Best Care Experience.
A collaborative project between the architectural team, the hospital, and two artists, this fully revitalized clinic includes a welcoming reception, renewed waiting areas, renovated exam rooms, new surgical facilities as well as efficient and comfortable operative spaces. But it offers more, nourishing the imagination of children with interactive art installations, and engaging activities.
In the waiting area, children view kaleidoscopic dioramas, through small peepholes on the walls. They are also able to play with a large, low-slung, pond-shaped table that displays projected animations. These interactive elements—integrated as part of the space—reward the children for their active participation. In addition, a set of illustrations on the surfaces of the clinic marks the various clinical functions and improve wayfinding throughout the clinic, visually referencing the neighbouring High Park and reducing stress levels. Together, these design interventions provide the community with Toronto’s foremost pediatric medical care—dynamic, nurturing, and imaginative.
