Trafalgar Park Community Centre

Central to the Trafalgar Park Community Centre project was the preservation of the heritage-designated Oakville Arena. Originally built in 1950 as a single-pad facility, the 41,000-square-foot building is a one-storey concrete block structure with a distinctive wood truss roof—one of the few remaining examples of Norman Otto Hipel’s work—making it an important local landmark.

The design team developed a plan that respects and revitalizes the historic structure, carefully restoring the wood truss roof while ensuring the arena continues to serve its intended function for years to come. The rink has been expanded to NHL dimensions, and all mechanical and ice-making equipment has been replaced with modern systems. New change facilities, seating and washrooms bring the arena up to current standards for both accessibility and overall operations of the facility.

Adjacent to the arena, a new community centre addition is connected via a shared galleria, fostering dynamic interaction between the two spaces. The design creates a vibrant complex where a wide range of users are accommodated, with spaces tailored to meet diverse program needs.

Amenities—including a gymnasium, indoor walking track, flexible multi-purpose rooms, and a senior centre—support wellness, inclusivity, and social connection. A redesigned lobby and administrative zones streamline circulation, enhance comfort, and improve accessibility throughout the facility.

The site also features a new Fire Hall on the southwest corner, incorporating a Fire Education and Heritage Room with interactive displays, educational materials, and historical artifacts. A reconfigured parking layout and an enhanced community park complement the overall design of the complex.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the LEED Silver–certified project delivers a durable, high-quality community centre that celebrates the building’s heritage while meeting Oakville’s evolving needs—offering diverse programs, active spaces, and social opportunities for all ages and reinforcing its role as a vibrant community hub.
