Wonder Condos
Wonder Condos is located on the historic site of the former Weston Bakery in Leslieville, Toronto and transforms a historic neighborhood landmark into a vibrant, mixed-use development. For over 125 years, the aroma of fresh bread from Eastern Avenue defined Toronto’s east end Leslieville neighbourhood. The Weston Bakery, produced the iconic Wonder Bread among other baked goods, and consisted of an eclectic mix of buildings added haphazardly over the years as it adapted to changing manufacturing needs. When the bakery closed, its sturdy industrial fabric presented an opportunity to re-imagine the site, continuing its legacy in response to its ever-changing surroundings.
Retaining the original character of the factory, Wonder Condos integrates modern residential and retail spaces. Stepping back from the streets, the U-shaped, eight-storey building with 286 units, includes retail spaces at street level along the streetscape that contribute to the area’s ongoing revitalization. With two wings along Logan and Booth Avenues, it creates a courtyard for residents and complements the surrounding single-family homes, promoting a pedestrian-friendly environment.
The open-concept loft units feature fire-protected exposed steel beams, high concrete ceilings, and insulated brick walls, preserving the industrial aesthetic while enhancing energy efficiency of the building. Innovative amenities like a dog spa and a co-working lounge, contribute to a sense of community. Industrial heritage artifacts salvaged from the bakery are integrated into the interior, creating an ongoing conversation between the past and the present. By building on an urban brown-field site, the Wonder Condominium intensifies the city’s density, while sustaining the historic streetscape.
As a blend of old and new, Wonder Condos preserves the historical significance of the Weston Bakery while providing modern living spaces. The thoughtful integration respects the neighborhood’s heritage making Wonder Condos a cornerstone of Leslieville’s transformation.
