Join Diamond Schmitt at the 2024 SLCan Sustainable Laboratory Conference, where Principal Nigel Tai and Senior Associate Vincent Goetz will be presenting different approaches the firm has taken on the design of research labs across the country as part of the session Reduction in Action – Case Studies in Sustainability for the Next Generation on November 20 at 10:30am.

In Stream 1C, Senior Associate, Vincent Goetz, will be giving a talk on the new St. Paul's Clinical Support and Research Centre in Vancouver. Alongside Kevin Shea from Introba, and Curtis Bagan from Providence Health Care, Vincent will demonstrate how by design, this new clinical support and research facility integrates future flexibility, enables collaboration and integrates discovery in a centre of excellence.

In Stream 2C, Principal Nigel Tai will speak about the Myron and Berna Garron Health Sciences Complex – the New Medical School at UofT Scarborough, A Place for Healing, Learning, and Bringing Community Together. Alongside Oleksandra Onisko from Pratus Group and Jeffrey Miller from the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, Nigel will share a few key sustainable and inclusive design features, including the use of a Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) façade to produce on-site energy; heat recovery strategy through a welcoming five storey high atrium where the public/practitioners/researchers/students can congregate; a unique building program that brings Research (science), Practice (healthcare), and Pedagogy (academic) under one roof—bridging the gap between university and the community.

Associates Martin Kristensen and Catherine Lin will also be presenting at the SLCan Sustainable Labs Conference as part of the session Separate but Together: How Two Projects Harmonize Social Interaction with Scientific Discovery on November 19 at 3:15pm EST.

The SLCan Sustainable Labs Conference is a Canadian national forum focused on strengthening the sustainable laboratory community, sharing knowledge, promoting innovation and best practices. This year’s conference will focus on exploring accessibility and inclusion in labs, reducing embodied carbon and net zero goals—from incubation to commercialization, and greening operations and policies.
